The standard trailer hitch wire uses a 4 Flat end. It is shaped in a rectangle with a total of 4 contact points. Your vehicle should be equipped with an electrical input used for trailering and towing. If your vehicle's input is instead round with a 6 prong alignment of contact points (5 around the outside and one in the middle), you will need this trailer hitch wire adapter to use a hitch cargo carrier or other trailer.

There are four kinds of electrical wiring systems used in trailering and towing. The most popular electrical hitch wire system is the 4 flat electrical adapter. Most trailers, hitch cargo carriers and vehicles willl be equipped with a 4 flat electrical system. This trailer wire adapter wll have a total of 4 contact points, arranged in a 4 by 1 rectange. However, some vehicles are equipped with round eletrical wire systems. If your vehicle has a round hitch wiring system, you will need an adapter to use most trailers and hitch cargo carriers.

The other three eletrical adapters are round adapters. There are 4 round, 6 round and 7 round adapters. A 4 Round adapter adapter has 4 contact points, arranged in a 2 x 2 formation. A 6 round adapter has a total of 6 contact points, arranged with 5 contact points around the outside of the circle and 1 contact point in the center. A 7 round adapter has a total of 7 contact points, arranged with 6 points around the outside of the circle and 1 contact point in the center.
