More information about Ski Carriers and Snowboard Carriers
1. Roof Ski Carriers
Very popular option because roof carriers allow you to store your skis and snowboards inside an enclosed, locked carrier, protecting them from the elements and any would-be thieves. Roof Carriers also very in size, so many allow you to bring along your gear-- helmets, boots, you name it-- as well as your skis and snowboards. Great option for people with big families! Tip: To avoid any fit issues, be sure to measure your skis first. Then, select a roof carrier that is longer than your skis! Sounds easy but you would be surprised how many people overlook the basics.
2. Roof Ski Racks
More affordable than enclosed roof carriers, roof ski racks are great if you have a multi-purpose roof rack system and you want to put it to use in the winter. Not all roof ski racks will lock right out of the box, however all can be outfitted with lock cores to ensure no one steals your skis and snowboards. Tip: Roof Racks generally can carry either 4 or 6 sets of skis and 2 or 4 snowboards. Not sure which one is right for you. Experience tells us you should always overestimate: you never know when you'll have friends along for the ride who need to store their skis too!
3. Hitch Ski Racks
An unsung but increasingly popular option. If your vehicle doesn't have a factory roof rack, this can be the cheapest option available to you. Hitch Ski Racks are simple: they are add-on mounts to most hitch bicycle racks. If your vehicle has a trailer hitch, odds are there is a hitch ski rack for you. Tip: Not every hitch ski rack will work with every hitch bike rack. The easiest way to ensure compatibility is to match brands: for example, try pairing a Thule hitch ski rack with a Thule hitch bike rack, or a Yakima bike hitch rack with a Yakima ski hitch rack.
