Hitch Ski Racks
Hitch Ski Racks attach or insert into the cradles of a bike hitch rack, allowing you to carry up to 6 sets of skis or 4 snowboards vertically. Hitch Ski Racks ride behind your vehicle, allowing easy waist-level access to your skis and snowboards once you hit the mountain. Hitch Ski Racks are lockable to protect your skis and snowboards.
On this page, we have listed hitch ski rack options from Thule Racks, Yakima Racks and Surco Racks. Remember, a Hitch Ski Rack needs to attach to a bike hitch rack, and not every hitch ski rack works with every hitch bike rack. For more information scroll down to the bottom of this page.
Why buy a Hitch Ski Rack?
Hitch Ski Racks are a great alternative to roof ski carriers or roof ski racks. Hitch Ski Racks are most popular with people who:
1. Already own a bike hitch rack. If you already own a Thule Bike Rack, Yakima Bike Rack or Surco Bike Rack, adding a hitch ski rack is extremely affordable and easy to do! As long as you match brands (Thule ski rack with Thule bike rack, Yakima ski rack with Yakima bike rack, etc.), just about every bike rack will work with these ski racks.
2. Own a vehicle that has a trailer hitch, both 2" and 1.25" hitches will do. If you own a vehicle with a trailer hitch and need to carry skis, it is almost always going to be cheaper to purchase a bike hitch rack and a bike ski rack than it will be to carry your skis in any other manner. However, there is an exception: if your vehicle has a factory roof rack system, many roof ski racks may be cheaper as they can mount directly to your factory rack.
3. Don't have a roof rack on your vehicle or don't want to go to the expense and trouble of putting one on. If you don't have a roof rack or factory rack, then the hitch option
4. Only need to carry up to 6 pairs of ski or 4 snowboards. If you need to carry more than this, you will need to try an enclosed roof carrier. some enclosed roof carriers can transport up to 12 pairs of skis!
5. Want an easy to access ski rack. It doesn't get any more convenient than having your skis and snowboards at waist-level.
Ensuring a proper fit with your Hitch Ski Rack.
Hitch Ski Racks drop into the cradles of hitch bike racks, providing a vertical mount for your skis and snowboards. The easiest way to ensure a proper hitch ski rack fit is to match brands: that is, to add a Thule Ski Rack to a Thule Bike Rack, a Yakima Ski Rack to a Yakima Bike Rack, or a Surco Ski Rack to a Surco Bike Rack. Not every ski rack within a brand will necessarily work with every bike rack. Be sure to check each product page for a list of bike racks that the ski rack will work with.
