The Two Types of Canoe Carriers
The two main styles of canoe carriers and racks are roof top canoe carriers and hitch mount canoe carriers. Roof canoe racks will attach to your roof rack system; hitch mount canoe racks will plug into your vehicle's trailer hitch.
1. Roof Canoe Carriers
Like other roof racks, roof canoe carriers attach to your roof rack's crossbars, allowing a scratch-free surface for loading your canoe. Due to the size and bulk of most canoes, it can be tricky to get a canoe on to your roof top. For that reason, most roof canoe carriers are quite simple: padded cradles that allow the canoe to rest upside down and then straps that secure the canoe in place.
2. Hitch Mounted Canoe Carriers
Don't let the name and their look fool you: hitch mount canoe racks still require a roof rack in the front of the vehicle. Confused? The Yakima Dry Dock Hitch Boat Rack and the Thule Goalpost Hitch Boat Rack are designed for pickup trucks that don't have a place for a second crossbar. They work quite simply: in front, you attach a normal truck roof rack with crossbar, to provide the front support for the boat. In the pack, you insert the hitch mounted canoe rack into your trailer hitch, which extends with a rear crossbar to support your boat in the back.
Other Roof Canoe Rack Key Considerations
-- The Thule Canoe Carrier can only be mounted to Thule square loadbars. If you have a Yakima roof rack system or a factory rack system, the Canoe Carrier will not be compatible.
-- Canoe Carriers generally come with tie down straps but it's never a bad idea to add additional straps when carrying a canoe, due to their large size.
-- If you opt for the Yakima Gunwhale Brackets to carry your canoe, be sure to pick up a set of the Bow/Stern Tie-Down Straps as well. This will allow for much greater stability for the entire boat while driving.
