Hitch cargo carriers (hitch racks and hitch cargo boxes) slide easily into your receiver hitch and are an excellent option for carrying extra gear. Hitch cargo carriers come in two types: a weatherproof lockable box or an open rack. Hitch carriers offer several advantages over roof racks and carriers:
Easy, waist-level access to your gear
Minimal effect on gas mileage
Hold a wide variety of luggage; large weight capacity (up to 500 lb)
Lower overall cost if you already have a hitch
Hitch cargo carriers can be mounted to one of the following frames:
Swingaway frame: A cargo carrier on a swingaway frames rotates out from your vehicle for clear access to the rear door or window. This is the best choice if you're looking for complete and easy rear-vehicle access.
Fixed frame: A fixed frame cargo carrier is the least expensive of all hitch cargo carriers. This is a good option if having frequent access to the rear of your vehicle isn't that important. On some vehicles you can access your gear through the rear window with the carrier in place.
Tilt-down frame: A tilt-down cargo carrier frame provides improved access to the rear of your vehicle and is less expensive than a swingaway model; however, a fully loaded cargo carrier can be cumbersome to return to its upright position.
